Planning a Wedding? Some Advice on Creating a Great Wedding Map

March 29, 2007

bride.pngAre you getting married? Trying to plan a wedding and communicate all of the details to the hundreds of people who will be attending, from guests to caterers to photographers? Well a wedding map can go a long way towards ensuring everyone has a great time and maintaining your sanity on your special day.

The best part? It’s free and super easy to do.

Here are a few tips on how to create a great wedding map using Wedding Mapper.

  • Be sure to include all key locations, including hotels and airports.
    • The key benefit of a Wedding Mapper map is for your guests to be able to see where everything is in relation to everything else. This is especially true for hotels and airports. Guests want to be able to see where they are staying and how close they will be to airports, the reception, the ceremony, etc.
  • Tell people about the area, include markers for local attractions.
    • Don’t look at your wedding map as a purely informative tool. This is a chance to tell your guests about a place that is special for you in some way because you chose to get married there. It likely says a lot about you and your fiancee that you chose this location, and you can use your wedding map to show people some of the highlights of the area so that they can learn more about it and get excited to visit.
  • Don’t add too many markers.
    • Frequently people get caught up in their maps, adding everything under the sun. The map quickly becomes overwhelming for people who are visiting. Sometimes this is justified because you are showing people all of the nearby vineyards for your wedding in Wine Country or something to that effect, but usually it is because people are just having fun making the map. Pay some attention to the markers you add to the map. Pretend you are a guide book and try to add only the most important attractions, letting people know why something was important enough to add to the map.
  • Add Photos!
    • Nothing brings a wedding map to life like photos of each location. It will add an extra dimension to your maps that your guests are sure to appreciate!
  • Make sure your guests see the map.
    • So often people create their wedding map and then hide it in the Directions page of their wedding website, making it look like a link to MapQuest. You’ve put some time into this and it’s really going to help your guests get excited about coming to your wedding. Make sure they see it and understand that this is something you personally put together!

If you follow these simple steps don’t be surprised if you get more than a few rave reviews from appreciative guests!

Guest Book and Notifications

March 23, 2007

Now that the majority of weddings are rolling around we’ve added in some new functionality for the guests under a new section called “Guest Services” when you are viewing your map (will not display when you are editing your map).

  1. The Guest Book (now your guests can leave messages for you on your map)
  2. Guest Notifications (now your guests can subscribe to receive a notification if your map changes at all)

Hopefully these two enhancements will help your guests stay up-to-date and more involved with your wedding!

Hide and Show Locations on your Map

March 15, 2007

We’ve added in a quick enhancement that we hope will help people with printing. Now you can hide and show different categories of locations on your map. In the Location List, if you collapse a category of locations they will disappear from the map now as well. This way you can have all sorts of locations on your map, including hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc., and if you only want to print a few key locations you can hide the rest of them before printing.

So if you start with a map that looks like this:

expanded wedding map

And click on the expanded “Hotel” link here:

expand and collapse wedding locations

Your list will collapse:

and your map will look like this (no hotels showing):

collapsed.gif

If you collapse most of the categories you’ll eventually have a map that looks like this:

all_collapsed.gif

Upload Files for your Guests to Print

March 14, 2007

We’ve just released the latest improvement to Wedding Mapper’s offering. A lot of people like to get a custom map designed for their invitations. Although you can easily print out Wedding Mapper maps, sometimes people want to make them look more professional and print them on cards to send in their invitations.

The only problem is that your guests may lose the maps you send them between the time they receive the invitation and the wedding day. Well Wedding Mapper has a great solution to this problem. Now, if you have upgraded your account, you can upload any file you want to Wedding Mapper so that your guests can easily download and print the file themselves.

So if you have a pdf file of your custom designed wedding map then you can simply upload that file and your guests will be able to access it and print it straight from Wedding Mapper without bothering you!

Adding Custom Links, Emails, Information

March 12, 2007

We’ve received a number of requests from people who want to add additional links to their wedding map. They want to be able to provide links back to their wedding website, to their registry sites, etc.

We’ve also received requests from people who would like to be able add their email and contact information to their maps so that people coming to their wedding can easily reach them if they have any problems at all.

So we put together an enhancement that allows you to add links, emails, and information paragraphs to your map. The enhancement is available to upgraded accounts. It will allow you to add as many links as you like to your map, giving you complete control over how you would like the links to display.

You’ll find the new link section in the left hand panel of the map. From there you can easily add, edit, delete, and reorganize your links.

Great Quote

March 12, 2007

I just received a great quote from a satisfied couple using Wedding Mapper. I just had to share:

Wedding mapper is such a great tool and so, so, so easy to setup and to use. I love it!!! My guests love it and have found wedding mapper invaluable. One guest told me that it was “awesome” and it made it so much easier for her to plan her trip to Washington, DC because she was able to see on an interactive map where everything is located in relation to everything else.

I love hearing about how useful Wedding Mapper is for people. If you have a story like this please share it with us!

Reordering Categories

March 6, 2007

We’ve added in the ability to reorder categories so that they appear in the exact order you want. This has been a very frequent request so hopefully people will find it useful.

To reorder your categories simply go to the “Edit Categories” page and drag the categories into the order you want!
